Pastoral Supervision for active miniSters
All active ministers (Ministers of Word and Sacrament and Church Related Community Workers) are reminded that at General Assembly 2020 it was agreed that Pastoral Supervision should be mandatory. Ministers are responsible for finding their own supervisor who will operate according to the guidance circulated from the Secretary for Ministries on 28/8/20. Supervisors should be accredited by APSE (www.pastoralsupervision.org.uk) or the BACP (www.bacp.co.uk) By exception, other supervisors may be approved by the Ministry Development Committee.
Ministers need to have at least six supervision sessions/year, which will, on average, cost £360 for the year. Pastorates are urged to cover at least half of this cost and more if they can afford it. The denomination will cover the remainder of the cost; ministers should pay supervision fees directly and then reclaim from their pastorate. The pastorate may claim back the denominational contribution on an annual basis, normally in December each year. As this is a mandatory requirement, Terms of Settlement will be amended in due course.
As this is mandatory, arising from the Past Case Review Learning Report, ministers and supervisors must confirm annually that regular supervision is taking place. Please let Lindsay Peniston know when you have found a supervisor and send the signed supervision covenant (provided in the above mailing from Church House – copies available from the Synod Office) to Lindsay who will record the commencement of the arrangement for MDC, and the annual confirmation must also go to Lindsay, by 31st January each year.
Supervision must be in place for all active ministers no later than July 2023, and experience is already showing that those who have started supervision are gaining greatly from the arrangement. We would encourage those that have not yet starter supervision to do so at the earliest opportunity.
