EDITOR OF “CONNECT”
The West Midlands Synod is
seeking to appoint a successor to
Mrs Melanie Frew as Editor of “Connect”, the twice-yearly Synod
Magazine, from March 2007
The
Synod would like to continue to develop “Connect” as
an important means of
communication and is looking for someone with imagination, journalistic flair and design skills who would be interested in taking this forward.
“Connect”
will have a focus on “Good News” stories from our Churches, items of
interest about forthcoming events,
correspondence, and opportunities to explore current issues, as well as
communicating news of Synod.

Part
Time - 37 hrs per week
Reporting to the
Chaplaincy Manager, the successful candidate will be an integral part of
the multi-faith team and the prison, working to ensure that all
prisoners are able to participate in worship and other
activities
in pursuance of their religious convictions in compliance with the
Prison Service Standards on Religion.
The successful
candidate will have extensive
training
and experience in the field of Restorative Justice and Conflict
Resolution, be able to demonstrate project management and leadership
skills as well as having experience working within a custodial
environment.
Preferably the
candidate would be of Christian faith and a member of the “Free Church
Group in Churches Together in
England
and
Wales
” and must either be ordained or the equivalent of a local preacher or
Lay reader equivalent. Applicants must provide a letter of
endorsement from their respective denomination.
We are looking for
a team player who is an effective communicator and influencer, with the
ability to manage adults with challenging behaviours. You would be
required to effectively demonstrate respect for the beliefs and
practices of others and uphold equality and diversity.

Contribute to the management of resources
- Nurture Chaplaincy volunteers in their contribution to your
own and other faith groups, where appropriate, in consultation
with your faith lead and the Co-ordinating Chaplain
- Contribute to the management of resources
- Contribute to the work of Chaplaincy to ensure that it
achieves the Prison Service’s objectives through the local
business plan
- Facilitate and deliver opportunities for worship, study and
religious programmes for your denomination or faith group
where appropriate
- Facilitate services provided by religious contractors and
volunteers
Team working
- Work collaboratively with other chaplains on the team to
ensure delivery of Prison Service Standards
- Actively engage in the maintenance of and provision of
facilities for worship and prayer / faith specific meetings
- Carry out such duties as shall be reasonably required by the
Co-ordinating Chaplain
- Cover appropriate tasks on behalf of your own and other
faith leads, where appropriate, and the Co-ordinating Chaplain
in their absence
- Work with the Chaplaincy Team, prisoners and staff in the
establishment to raise awareness of relevant feasts, fasts,
etc.
Advice and Guidance
- Communicate with the Chaplaincy Team on matters of faith /
spirituality; promoting human, spiritual and religious values
- Be a resource for information on your faith to staff
- Contribute to training programmes and materials for staff
and volunteers
Delivery of establishment aims
- Contribute to achieving an acceptable or better rating in an
audit of the Religion Standard
Carry out statutory and such other duties as the Governor or
Co-ordinating Chaplain shall require and contribute to
management groups as required
Resettlement
- Contribute to opportunities for prisoners to engage in
worship and other spiritual activities that encourage a
greater openness to their spiritual dimension and personal
development
- Facilitate development of links with outside faith
communities
- Provide for the pastoral and spiritual needs of the
establishment
- Provide general pastoral care and, where appropriate, help
to bring resolution to crisis situations involving prisoners.
Provide such care where appropriate to staff or their families
- Visit all areas of the establishment and be accessible and
approachable representing the spiritual dimension of life
- Provide for the pastoral and spiritual needs of your faith
community
- Work with your own and other faith leads, where appropriate,
to enable prisoners to observe religious holy days and special
religious observances
- Communicate clearly and timely the faith specific activities
that you facilitate or arrange with the faith leads and
Co-ordinating Chaplain
Advocacy and faith community links
- Maintain close contact with your own faith community
- Meet regularly with and inform faith leaders of current
issues and be an advocate for the rights of prisoners in the
faith and wider community
Eligibility:
Church of England -
Be an ordained member of the Anglican Communion (or of churches
part of the Porvoo and Meiseen Agreements or
Be a Licensed Reader
Have formal endorsement in the form of the Licence of the
Diocesan Bishop
Free Church -
Be an ordained minister of a Free Church denomination, which
is a member of Churches Together in England & Churches
Together in Wales or
In lieu of ordination, candidates will need to have received
training to a recognised academic competence on Theology,
Biblical Studies and Pastoral Care. Written verification
of these qualification will need to be provided.
Formal endorsement from the candidate's own denomination.
Church leaders, i.e. Moderators, Chairs and Superintendents etc.
will be asked to provide written confirmation attesting to the
credentials, qualifications and accountability of each candidate
sponsored by their denomination. To be obtain via the Revd

Salary
£20,277 - £31,447 pro rata
Work Life Balance
The Prison Service is keen to encourage alternative working
arrangements. Work life balance provides greater opportunities
for staff to work more flexibly wherever managers can
accommodate requests to do so.
Flexible working hours
The Prison Service offers a flexible working system for certain
grades.
Annual Leave
On entry most posts offer between 22 days and 25 days per
year, with senior posts attracting an annual leave allowance of 30
days on entry. On top of this you will also receive public and
privilege holidays. Leave for part-time and job share posts will
be calculated on a pro-rata basis.
Pension
The Civil Service offers a choice of two pension schemes,
giving you the flexibility to choose the pension that suits you
best.
Training
The Prison Service is committed to staff development and
offers an extensive range of training and development
opportunities.
Season ticket advance
After two months service you will be eligible to apply
for a season ticket advance to purchase a quarterly, or longer
period season ticket for travel between home and office.
Childcare vouchers
The Prison Service offers a childcare vouchers scheme.
The scheme enables staff to take part of their salary in the form
of Childcare Vouchers. This is known as a Salary Sacrifice. The
vouchers can then be used to help meet the costs of any form of
registered or approved childcare for children aged 0 -16. The
vouchers are exempt from tax and National Insurance contributions.
